Music of the
Soul Concert
-
Our first
official concert open to one and all! Friday 11th December 2009 @ Govinda's Kirtan Centre, Top Floor, 83 Middle Abbey
Street, Dublin 1. Concert begins from 6.30pm
You'll be hard-pressed to find another event anywhere in Dublin in the month
of December which will give you that inner spiritual boost to the same degree that the Music of the
Soul concert will do. We have little doubt that the question on your lips that evening will be: 'So, when
is the next concert?'
Kirtan sacred chant music is music from another world, literally. The mantra
chants effect the soul and purify the heart and the consciousness so we see everything around us in a new and fresh
light. When the volunteers of the Govinda's Kirtan Centre and the Vaishnava devotees of Krishna make a special
effort for this concert, you'll see the difference, and you'll understand what we mean here.

This event will be hosted by our very own Praghosa Das, whose jovial nature
will lighten the evening (although the music will already have everyone on a high). His Grace Praghosa Das Adhikari
is the founder of the Govinda's Restaurants in Dublin, and if you happen to have seen him in action on the Late
Late Show some years ago, you'll know he's a great character (not to mention, it goes without saying that he's also
of good character!)
Q. So who is this concert
for?
Ans. Literally anyone with a head on their shoulders. If you've never been to
a 'kirtan' you may just want to pop along, sit on a chair at the back, relax, and listen. You'll be free to escape
through the exit doors if you just find it's not your thing. But we guarantee that you'll love the music and the
experience. Now, if you want to participate a little more in the kirtan, then you'll sit closer to the front
'Eastern-style', and you'll be clapping your hands and even singing along to some of the simple chants.
Q. What songs will be sung?
Kirtan involves the singing of either mantras or songs. These songs are verses of spiritual
significance often written in the Sanskrit language. Sanskrit is the language of philosophy and culture and
you're already familiar with several Sanskrit words such as yoga, mantra, chakra, guru, swami, etc. A combination
of mantras and songs will be brighten up the dark evening of December 11th in Dublin City Centre. There are
many mantras such as om, or aum, Govinda Jaya Jaya, and Om nama Shivaya. It
is said in Chaitanya Upanishad, Chaitanya Charitamrita and other texts that in this day and age the most
significant and most recommended mantra for anybody to chant is the great mantra (Maha-mantra): Hare
Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. This mantra is
written in the Sanskrit alphabet (Devanagari) as:

Q. What is 'kirtan'
music?
Kirtan is the call-and-response singing and chanting of mantras and songs. It is fun,
up-lifting and meditative. Generally everyone takes part, as the separation between 'performers' and 'attendees'
isn't really so apparent. However, if it's your first time and you just want to observe the proceedings, that
is fine. You can also treat the experience just like going to a musical recital. Don't worry...You won't be
asked or expected to sing!
However, kirtan is all about participation, so the more you sing, clap and get
into the experience, the better.
Q. What are the seating
arrangements? (N.B.)
Ans. Kirtan in temples and yoga studios is most commonly experienced where both the lead singers
and the attendees are seated on the floor Asian-style. We do have ordinary chairs, and if you want one you
are advised to come early. You can also book a chair by sending us an email with the names of the persons
requesting a chair. Note: there are a limited number of chairs.
